Today is the Feast of Saint Joseph! The adoptive father of Christ, Saint Joseph is one of the most well-known and beloved saints. His role as a carpenter and worker is important, but as a father he stands alone. Saint Joseph’s role as the adoptive father of Christ was so important that he was given two feast days, one celebrating the worker side of things, the other concerning fatherhood.
While Joseph’s life is less documented than Mary’s his role as father to Christ was incredibly important. We know that Joseph was a man of incredible virtue and obedience. He had Faith in God that, though he could not know the outcome of the sweeping changes God wished to make to Joseph’s life, he accepted them. Joseph was not rich; the fact that he had to sacrifice two turtledoves at the Temple instead of a lamb is evidence of this. Nonetheless, he dedicated his life to raising the Son of God through hard work and perseverance.
