Mid 2005, while meeting with the other women in a Small Christian Community, we started talking about dream vocations. One woman said that she always wanted to start a Catholic bookstore. My response was that I did too. So offering the project up to God, we said “if it be Your Will”.

So like any good 21st century computer person, I “googled” the topic and got a lot of great information, including that one should expect to spend $30 – 50,000 on fixtures – shelving, etc. So off to eBay I went and found a store full of fixtures in a warehouse – 3 blocks from my house for 1/10 of the price. (OK God, guess this is your will.) Now off to find a storefront.

The Catholic commercial Realtor® I was working with called me and told me to go to this address and keep an “open mind”.  We drove up to the center and there is a gorgeous plaza with olive trees (Gethsemane), white roses (St. Therese), and a fountain (living water). The space wasn’t "built-out" and the owner was willing to finish it. The owner talked to us and asked if we realized that the store would lose money for the first 2 years? We replied yes, since the accountant had told us that the easiest way to become a millionaire is to be a billionaire and open a bookstore (bada-bing).  (Your will be done.)

So we signed the lease (mid-December 2005) with the proviso that the space had to be ready no later than February 15, 2006 for the grand opening on February 28^th, 2006, Mardi Gras, or else we couldn’t have a grand opening until after Easter! We then joined the Chamber of Commerce and asked for a ribbon cutting, and they said there was only 1 date available in February ~ the 28^th.

The most incredible woman wandered in to talk about art and was offered the job of manager. Paula is the sole reason that the opening happened and things were so organized, since I was still working a “real” job. My daughter, Jessica, was working retail and has a real eye for merchandising so she helped (and continues to help) make the store “look pretty”.

So before there was the ability to take a breath, faith alone opened GodSpace to serve the Conejo Valley and greater Ventura and Los Angeles counties.
